Shopify agentic storefronts explained: what Shopify sends to AI
Shopify already sends your products to ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta. Here is how each channel gets them, what you control, and what to check, from Shopify's own Help Center.
Shopify agentic storefronts, defined
Shopify agentic storefronts are how Shopify makes your products discoverable, and often buyable, inside AI channels like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta. Shopify turns them on by default for eligible stores.
01
The short version
Shopify already sends your products to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta. You don't need an app. You do need clean product data, because that's what they all receive.
- 01
Shopify's agentic storefronts let shoppers find and buy your products inside AI channels. Shopify says it's "active by default for eligible stores".
- 02
Most channels get your products through Shopify Catalog. Google AI Mode and Gemini get them through Google Merchant Center.
- 03
Shopify Catalog sends your title, description, options, images, price, availability and other key attributes, and keeps them updated.
- 04
You manage it all under Sales channels, then Agentic, in your Shopify admin.
- 05
Every Shopify store also serves
/agents.mdand/llms.txtautomatically. No app is needed for those either.
02
The four AI channels
Each channel gets your products a little differently, and checkout works differently too.
| Products come from | Where the shopper pays | Shoppers it sells to | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Catalog | Your own online store checkout, in an in-app browser or new tab | United States | |
| Shopify Catalog | Direct checkout inside Copilot, on by default | United States | |
| Google Merchant Center, via the Google & YouTube channel | Direct checkout inside Google, rolling out | United States, Canada, Australia | |
| Meta, including Muse | Shopify Catalog | Direct checkout on Meta surfaces, on by default | United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Singapore |
From Shopify's Help Center pages for each channel, read October 26, 2026. Your store can be based anywhere; these are the shoppers each channel sells to.
You keep the customer
Shopify says you "retain full ownership of the customer relationship". Orders from AI channels show in your Shopify admin with the channel they came from.
03
Check your store in five minutes
Everything is in one place in your Shopify admin.
Open Sales channels, then Agentic
This is where each AI channel is turned on or off.
Look at Sources, then Shopify Catalog
An eligible store shows how many products are in Shopify Catalog. An ineligible store shows "Ineligible". Click it to see why.
Fill in your three store policies
Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy, under Settings, then Policies. Every channel requires them.
Connect Google Merchant Center
Install the Google & YouTube sales channel and turn on automatic product and shipping sync. Shopify says your products must be in Merchant Center to be discoverable in Google AI Mode and Gemini.
Review your product data mapping
If your titles, descriptions or categories live in metafields or tags, use Shopify Catalog Mapping so the right data is sent.
04
What Shopify sends, and what you control
Your Shopify product data is the feed. Improve it once and every channel gets the better version.
Product details
Title, description, options, images, price, availability and key attributes, "structured in a way that AI agents can parse and understand".
Updates
Shopify Catalog "continuously updates your product data", so channels get your latest stock and prices.
Variants grouped
Catalog Mapping can group separate products that are really variants of one product, so they show as a single listing.
Sale prices
You choose whether compare-at prices are sent. If they are, AI channels may show the strikethrough price.
Legal text
Shopify asks for any legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters of a product description.
No fees
Shopify says there are no fees for selling through these channels, beyond your normal payment processing.
Shopify's own advice for being found by AI agents is to have "complete and well-structured product information" and to follow SEO best practices. For what that means on a product page, see how to optimize Shopify product pages for AI search.
05
Direct checkout: what doesn't carry over
In Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta, shoppers can pay without visiting your store. Some of your store's setup doesn't come with them.
| Works | Doesn't work |
|---|---|
| Automatic discounts and discount codes | Subscriptions, product bundles and customizable products |
| Shopify Functions for shipping, discounts and checkout validation | Google Analytics and custom pixels. Only server-to-server pixels fire |
| Card payments, and some of your accelerated checkout options | Local delivery, store pickup and pickup points |
| Some checkout blocks in Copilot and Google, not guaranteed. None in Meta | Most other checkout blocks: upsells, loyalty, trust badges, custom fields |
Worth knowing
Because client-side pixels don't fire, sales made inside these channels won't show in Google Analytics the usual way. Check the channel attribution on the order in Shopify instead. You can turn direct checkout off per channel and send shoppers to your own store.
06
Crawlers, robots.txt and agents.md
Shopify Catalog is the main route. AI crawlers reading your site is a second one.
Blocking crawlers doesn't stop the feed
Shopify: blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt "affects only open-web discoverability". Catalog data still goes to the channels you've turned on.
Bot management is handled
Shopify handles bot management at the network level, and doesn't recommend putting a proxy in front of your store.
agents.md and llms.txt come built in
Every store serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt with your store name, policies and sitemap. Edit them with theme templates if you want.
They don't replace product data
Shopify says those files "don't replace any Shopify Catalog capabilities". Product data still comes from Catalog.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an app to get my Shopify products into ChatGPT?
No. Shopify sends eligible stores' products to ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot through Shopify Catalog by default. Google AI Mode and Gemini need Google Merchant Center, which the free Google & YouTube sales channel connects for you.
Do I need an app to make an llms.txt file?
No. Every Shopify store serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt automatically. Shopify says you don't need a third-party app to generate them.
How do I hide a product from AI channels?
Turning off a channel's Catalog access isn't enough, because AI can still find products through the open web. Shopify's route is to set the product to Unlisted, which also hides it from Google and your store's own search.
Are B2B or wholesale products sent to AI channels?
No, when Shopify can identify them, for example through Shopify B2B catalogs or password-protected stores. Products behind custom B2B apps may not be detected.
How do I know if AI channels are recommending my products?
Shopify shows orders and referrals by channel. To see which products AI names when shoppers ask, ask your buyer questions repeatedly, or use a tool like Produkto, which tracks every product in your catalog daily.
