How to get your products into Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Google's AI answers read the same index as normal search, and its product results come from Merchant Center. Here is how to be in both, from Google's and Shopify's own documentation and our data.

01

The short version

Google's AI answers read the same index as normal search. Its shopping results in AI Mode and Gemini come from Google Merchant Center. A Shopify store needs both.

  1. 01

AI Overviews and AI Mode link to pages from Google's search index. Google says there are "no additional requirements" to appear and no special optimizations.

  2. 02

Product results in Google AI Mode and Gemini come from Google Merchant Center. On Shopify, the Google & YouTube sales channel keeps it in sync.

  3. 03

Google lists the basics: let it crawl, keep important facts in text, keep structured data matching the page, and keep Merchant Center up to date.

  4. 04

In our data, Google AI Overviews named fewer products than ChatGPT or Perplexity and cited video and social posts most.

  5. 05

Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside your normal web search numbers.

02

Two routes into Google's AI

Your pages can be cited as sources, and your products can be shown as products. They come from different places.

What it takesA page that's indexed and eligible to show with a snippetA Merchant Center account with your products in it, meeting Google's requirements

Why both matter

Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews "may use a 'query fan-out' technique", running several related searches across subtopics and data sources for one question. A product can be reached through your pages, your Merchant Center listing, or both.

03

Shopify: connect Merchant Center

Shopify says product discovery for Google AI Mode and Gemini "is powered by Google Merchant Center". Here is what to check.

  1. Install the Google & YouTube sales channel

If you don't have a Merchant Center account, installing the channel creates one and syncs your products.

  2. Turn on automatic sync

In the channel's Product feed settings, turn on "Automatically sync products" and "Automatically sync shipping information".

  3. Fix what Merchant Center flags

Your products have to meet Google's requirements for free listings, including a return policy. Check the products Merchant Center flags and fix them first.

  4. Fill in your store policies

Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy, under Settings, then Policies. Shopify requires all three for its AI channels.

  5. Keep Shopify and Merchant Center matching

Shopify asks you to keep product data and policies "up to date so that the information in Google Merchant Center matches your online store".

Shopify is also rolling out direct checkout, so shoppers can buy inside Google AI Mode and Gemini without leaving the chat. It needs a store selling to the United States, Canada or Australia, and it's on by default for eligible stores. Subscriptions, bundles and customizable products aren't supported there, and Google Analytics pixels don't fire in that checkout. You can turn it off under Sales channels, then Agentic. Your products can still be discovered either way.

04

What Google says helps

Google's own list for AI features is the same as for good search results. It also says what you don't need.

Let Google crawl your pages

Don't block Googlebot in robots.txt. Google says robots.txt for Googlebot is the control for AI features too.

Link to every product

Make content "easily findable through internal links". Collections and related products do this on Shopify.

Put important facts in text

Google asks for important content "in textual form", supported by good images and video.

Keep structured data honest

"Making sure your structured data matches the visible text on the page." Price, availability and ratings in your markup should match what a shopper sees.

Keep Merchant Center current

Google names "Merchant Center and Business Profile information" in the same list.

Skip the special files

"You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features."

05

Product markup, briefly

Most Shopify themes add Product markup already. Check that the main fields are there and correct.

FieldGoogle's labelWhy it's worth having
name, image, offers (price, currency)RequiredWithout them, the page isn't eligible for merchant listings
brand, gtin, mpn, skuRecommendedIdentify exactly which product it is
aggregateRating, reviewRecommendedReviews and ratings, when you show them on the page
color, material, size, audienceRecommendedThe attributes shoppers filter on
shippingDetails, hasMerchantReturnPolicyRecommendedDelivery and return terms

From Google's merchant listing structured data documentation. Only pages where a shopper can buy the product are eligible, and Google recommends marking up product pages rather than collection pages.

Keep it in proportion

Google says there's "no special schema.org structured data" needed for AI features. Complete, accurate markup is hygiene for product listings, not a shortcut into AI answers.

What we saw in AI Overviews

In 251 Google AI Overviews for one small UK skincare brand's buyer questions, Google named fewer products than the other assistants and leaned on video and social.

47%

of AI Overviews named at least one specific product. The rest gave advice only.

20%

This is one brand in one category over three weeks, so treat it as a pattern to check against your own questions. It does suggest that for Google, product videos and social posts about your products are worth having, not only your product pages. For the full data, see what 856 real answers show.

07

How to measure it

Search Console shows the clicks. It doesn't show which products Google's AI named.

01

Search Console

Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode in the Performance report, under the "Web" search type, together with normal results.

02

Merchant Center

Shows whether your products are approved and eligible to be shown.

03

The answers themselves

Ask your buyer questions in Google and record which products the AI Overview names. Answers vary, so check repeatedly.

An honest note

Google doesn't publish how it picks products for AI answers. Measure on the same buyer questions before and after you change anything.

08

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to do anything special to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google says a page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and "there are no additional technical requirements". The usual search basics apply.

How do my Shopify products get into Google AI Mode?

Through Google Merchant Center. Install Shopify's Google & YouTube sales channel, turn on automatic product and shipping sync, and fix any products Merchant Center flags.

Do I need an llms.txt file for Google?

No. Google says you don't need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in its AI features. Shopify stores serve one automatically anyway.

Can I see AI Overview traffic separately in Search Console?

Google counts it in the Performance report under the "Web" search type, together with other search traffic, so it isn't shown as its own line.

Can I keep my content out of AI Overviews?

Google points to its standard preview controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex. These also limit how your page shows in normal search.
