How to get your products into ChatGPT Shopping

On Shopify, getting in is mostly automatic. Getting picked depends on your product data, your reviews and what other sites say. Everything here comes from OpenAI's and Shopify's own documentation.

ChatGPT Shopping, defined

ChatGPT Shopping is the product carousel ChatGPT shows when a question sounds like shopping: products with images, details and links to buy. OpenAI says the results are chosen by ChatGPT and are not ads.

01

The short version

Getting in is mostly automatic for Shopify stores that sell to the US. Getting picked depends on your product data, your reviews and what other sites say about you.

  1. 01

When a question sounds like shopping, ChatGPT can show a carousel of products with images, details and links to buy.

  2. 02

OpenAI says these results "are selected independently by ChatGPT and are not ads". There is no way to pay for a place in them.

  3. 03

On Shopify, your products reach ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog by default, if your store sells to US customers and your store policies are filled in.

  4. 04

Not on Shopify? You can apply to send OpenAI a product feed directly.

  5. 05

Being in the index doesn't mean being shown. ChatGPT picks the products it thinks fit the question.

02

How ChatGPT picks products

OpenAI publishes what it looks at, but not how it weighs each part. Here is what its own help page says.

  1. It reads the shopper's intent

A product appears "when ChatGPT perceives it to be relevant to your intent", using the question and context such as Memory. A stated budget makes it focus on price.

  2. It looks at product data

"Structured metadata from first-party and third-party providers (e.g., price, product description) and other third-party content."

  3. It reads reviews

Review summaries are "based on reviews from public websites". Labels like "Budget-friendly" can come from what reviewers say, not from your price alone.

  4. It may rewrite your title

ChatGPT "may generate simplified product titles and descriptions", because stores describe the same product differently.

  5. It ranks the sellers

When several stores sell the product, they are ranked on "availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of that item".

The maker counts

A brand selling its own product on its own store is the maker. That's one of the factors OpenAI names for ranking sellers, so make sure your store is clearly the brand's official store.

03

Shopify stores: check these four things

Shopify says you don't need to do anything for ChatGPT to discover your products. It's still worth five minutes to confirm the requirements are met.

You sell to the US

Your store must sell to customers in the United States. It can be based anywhere.

Your three policies are filled in

Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy, under Settings, then Policies.

ChatGPT access is on

It's on by default. Check under Sales channels, then Agentic, then ChatGPT, that Shopify Catalog access hasn't been switched off.

Your products are eligible

They must meet Shopify Catalog's requirements. B2B-only products and products OpenAI's commerce policies prohibit aren't shown.

There are no fees for selling through ChatGPT. Shoppers who click buy finish on your own online store checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab, so your branding, customizations and payment methods all carry over. Shopify also asks that any legal disclosures sit in the first 6,000 characters of a product description.

04

Not on Shopify: the direct feed

Other stores can apply to send OpenAI a product feed, a file listing every product and its details, kept up to date.

ID, title, descriptionWhat the product is. OpenAI suggests titles under 150 characters and plain-text descriptions under 5,000.Required

Let ChatGPT read your site

Besides product data, ChatGPT searches the web. If its search crawler is blocked, your pages can't be shown in its answers.

CrawlerWhat it's forIf you block it
OAI-SearchBotChatGPT's search features"Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers."
GPTBotTraining OpenAI's modelsYour content isn't used for training. OpenAI lists search separately, under OAI-SearchBot

Open yourstore.com/robots.txt and check that OAI-SearchBot isn't disallowed. Shopify's default file doesn't block it. OpenAI says changes take about 24 hours to apply.

What you can work on

Each of these maps to something OpenAI says ChatGPT looks at.

Product descriptions that state the facts

What it is, who it's for, materials or ingredients, sizes, limits. Price and product description are the examples OpenAI gives. See how to optimize Shopify product pages for AI search.

Clear, specific titles

ChatGPT may simplify your title. Make it easy to simplify correctly: product type plus the key fact.

Accurate price and stock

Availability and price are factors OpenAI names for ranking sellers. Keep both current in Shopify.

Barcodes where you have them

A GTIN identifies the exact product. If your products have barcodes, add them in Shopify.

Reviews on public websites

Review summaries and labels come from public reviews. Show reviews on your product pages, and earn them on other sites too.

Mentions on the sites ChatGPT cites

"Other third-party content" includes the roundups, retailers and forums it reads. Check which sites it cites for your buyer questions.

An honest note

OpenAI doesn't publish how it weighs these. Which changes move recommendations is still an open question, so measure on the same buyer questions before and after you change anything.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT Shopping?

No. OpenAI says product results are not ads and aren't influenced by its partnerships. Ads in ChatGPT are shown separately from product results.

Does it cost anything to sell through ChatGPT on Shopify?

Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT. You pay your standard payment processing fees.

My store doesn't sell to the US. Can I still appear?

Shopify's ChatGPT channel requires selling to US customers. ChatGPT can still find your pages through web search, and you can apply to OpenAI for a direct feed.

Why does my product show up for one question but not another?

ChatGPT picks products for each question's intent, and answers change from run to run. Visibility is best measured as the share of many answers that name your product.

How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my products?

Ask the questions your buyers ask, without your brand name, in a fresh chat, several times. Here's a step-by-step way to do it. Produkto does it daily for every product in a Shopify catalog.
